Over the years Display Advertising has come and gone in popularity but they continue to be a valuable mix in online advertising. Originally called banner ads, display advertising can be used in a variety of sizes and platforms including mobile, tablet and desktop. The term “banner ad” now references a specific ad dimension (468×60 pixels)

Display Advertising Types

There is a variety of online display ad types exist, everything from hyperlinked images to interactive with the feel of a small website. Creative business owners usually mix and match ad types making almost every ad a hybrid. Here are a few of the most common types:

Static

Static display ads, which have been around since the early 90′s, have no movement or visitor interaction. They are the simplest with only a  hyperlinked to an advertiser’s website. Most are a combination of images and text.

Animated

Using the .GIF or Flash formats animated ads create the appearance of movement. Depending on the creativity of the designer and purpose of the ad, you can animate the entire thing or only part of it, it’s really up to you. Website owners normally have limits on the file size and how many time the ad can loop.

Interactive

Interactive display ads are just that, a way for the visitor to interact with the ad. These ads include a long list of tools and games. They entice the visitor with limited functionality in efforts to bring the new user to the advertiser’s site. You can link only a portion of the ad or the entire ad. These types of ads can also pass information such as email and zip codes entered in by the user. The coding of the ad is the only limit to what you can do within the guidelines of the Publishers site.

An example of that would be the “Whack a Mole!” ad that ran for many years.

Video ads

Video ads all for movement and sound to be used together such as a TV commercial. Ads can be stand alone or inserted into other online videos as a pre-roll, post-roll, or insertial which are ads before, after, and during the video respectively.

Expanding ads

Expanding ads start with one size and grow when clicked. They can most often combine several different types of the previous ads to gain the functionality that the advertiser desires.
